It’s been a long day and you are just about ready to hit the sack. Every inch of your body is aching and you are only thinking of lying down and drifting off to lalaland. But of course, your five year old has other ideas. He is still bouncing off the wall and pleading with you to play with him.
Although our immediate reaction would be to snarl at him and shoo him away, we know that’s really not the best way to deal with the situation. How then do we stop ourselves from doing something we may regret later.
One word: BREATHE
In such situations, and I bet there will be many such situations in our life, the one thing that can stop us from doing something rash is to take a second and breathe. Focus on your breath. Feel the air going in and out through your nostrils. Take a few deep breaths again keeping your focus on the process. This method is by far the most successful in regaining composure. It has helped me innumerable times to step back from the edge. And when I haven’t, I have usually done things I regret to this day.
So, take a deep breath and don’t forget to keep your focus on it to help you tide over such situations and regain balance. Looking back you will thank yourself for doing so.
